Report: Russia, Hungary agree on long-term gas deal

MOSCOW, Aug 30 (PRIME) – Russia and Hungary have agreed on a 15-year long-term gas contract to supply 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year, Bloomberg reported citing a statement by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto on Monday.

“Hungary and Russia have agreed on a new long-term gas supply contract, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said after a meeting with Gazprom head Alexei Miller,” Bloomberg wrote.

The agency quoted Szijjarto as saying that Hungary will buy 4.5 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas from Russia annually, including 3.5 bcm to come through Serbia and 1 bcm through Austria. The agreement will be signed in late September, and supplies under the new contract will start on October 1.

The conditions of the contract can be changed in 10 years, the Hungarian minister said.

Last week Szijjarto said he planned to come to St. Petersburg on Monday to discuss details of a gas supply contract between Budapest and Gazprom, decide on the price and flexibility of the agreement. Gazprom did not disclose results of the talks, saying only that the parties considered the key issues and prospects for cooperation, including gas supplies to Hungary, as well as the expansion of the Hungarian gas transportation system.
